VISA-News

Dec. 04, 2008:

  • The Thai Immigration has changed the conditions for the border runners again: the 30-day visa upon arrival is from now on only available to tourists arriving by air. Travellers using the land crossings into Thailand will only be issued 15-day stamps, Malaysian citizens exempted. Since it cannot be guaranteed that thePAD won't be blocking the airports again, it is strongly advised to get a visa from one of Thailand's embassies or consulates before heading in to Thailand.

Introduction

I'm trying to set  up a new non-commercial  page with Thailand information based upon personal experiences. After many years living in Thailand as expat it can be assumed that we do know a little about our host country. What we do know little of is programming and setting up a website. So please have some patience. It's not pure helplessness when some things look a little strange: we're also experimenting a lot to find out what we like this website to look like most.

Send email to admin.

We're living at times of a shrinking economy and shrinking finances; so it has now been decided  not to continue this page after its domain expiry date on Nov. 11, 2009. Therefore the domain is for sale already. You can contact me, if you're interested. Sorry, if the news might get updated only sporadically from now on or not at all anymore.

No tears, please! Other pages will spring up where you can keep yourself informed. And for myself, I think I should better concentrate on only a few pages instead of a whole lot. Besides, I found out that it is much better not to use so many different domains; I can create pages on sub domains. That way the domains themselves will get known much faster, because I can create my own indexes.

Well, and after all it's just a hobby. Even hobbies shouldn't be a plain waste of time and money, what they'll be if you're doing too many different at the same time.

Site-NEWS May 11, 2009

Hi, sorry to those who got here by a search engine, hoping to find the ultimate info about Thailand. This site is part of a part-time one-man effort to improve the information about Thailand on the internet. Due to limited capacity and too big a project I cannot do as fast. But I can assure that it is not standing still. It's just this new site that is not in a top position on the priority list. Others are developing faster though not at the speed of light since I also keep helping some friends of mine with their projects.  It's all meant to be just a hobby for me on one side which I hope will turn out useful to others. Have some patience please.

Site-NEWS April 27, 2009

We announced earlier that the page 1-2-thailand.com will not be continued after the expiry date of the domain on Nov 11, 2009, that the domain 1-2-thailand.com will not be renewed. There is no change in that. But we already acquired a new domain for multi purposes: thld.info. We will set up many different sites with sub domains to thld.info which stands for Thailand info. The development of every new domain has to be thought over very careful.  1-2-thailand.com is a nice slogan but not a good domain name I have found out. Especially it cannot be used for subdomains which can be used for many different sites at different webhosts and still support the traffic data of the main domain. At least that's my opinion now. Maybe I'll find out something else during the tests and building up.

Thld-NEWS March 21, 2009

The opposition party's no confidence vote against Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and five ministers from his cabinet failed with 176 against 246 votes in parliament today. It was expected to fail but the thaksin followers hoped to shake the democrat government a little. So after all they gave more ammunition to whom they're fighting against. The exchange rate of the Thai Baht against werstern currencies already weakened in the last few days and is expedcted to weaken further. Good for exports and the ailing export industries of Thailand.

Bad news for thailand and tourism again: late last  night a boat carrying divers sunk near the coast of Phuket. Six passengers are still missing. The typical tune of insufficient standards cannot be sung now since the boat was neither overfilled nor equipped below standard; it belonged to one of the best in Phuket. The company it belonged to is operated by Germans. The reason for the sinking is still unknown.

Thld-NEWS Feb. 27, 2009

News are that the red-shirted Thaksin Followers started to disperse giving up their siege of Government House. The decisision was announced last night.

Thld-NEWS Feb. 24, 2009

The red-shirted Thaksin Followers have surrounded Government House in Bangkok, demanding the resignation of PM Abhisit Vejjajiva, dissolution of partliament and new elections. About 6.000 police and army are ready to uphold order. The number of the protesters keeps increasing and was last estimated at 10.000.

The Thai government has released its economic data of the last year. The economy shrank 6.1% in the October to December period from the previous quarter, the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) said. Compared with the same period a year earlier, the economy contracted by 4.3% in the fourth quarter. Exports, which account for more than 60% of Thailand's gross domestic product, dropped 9.4%. Still the conomy grew by 2.6  over the whole year. A shrinking of 1 % is predicted for 2009.

Who would have ever thought of the thai PM admitting that there were "instances" in which Rohingyas were towed out to sea? But he actually did in an interview with CNN, after there was no way of denying anymore facing the testimony of survivors rescued near Sumatra. But of course he doesn't know who is responsible for that procedure.

Thld-NEWS Feb. 2, 2009

8 dead and 97 injured were the result of three drunk brawlers at the inauguration ceremony of a new temple in Nong Bua Lamphu on Saturday night. One of the brawlers admits according to police to have drawn a handgrenade and thrown it another brawler. How he seems to have visited a temple inauguration ceremony with a sharp handgrenade in his pocket still seems unclear. The thai media hardly reported about this incident.

Thld-NEWS Feb. 1, 2009

Demonstrations against the government by followers of Thaksin Shinawatra, the so-called "Red-Sirts" were held last weekend again with around 30.000 participating. They demanded the resignation of the government, vowing to come back for demonstrations, if their demand of the resignation of the government has not been fulfilled by the 15th.

Thld-NEWS Jan. 25, 2009

The affair of the Rohingyas became more and more of a shackle for Thailand with the UNHCR requesting contact to 126 Rohingyas who were said to be detained in Thailand. The UNHCR wanted to question them as witnesses. First the PM denied that request. Upon public pressure he later "granted" it. Not even a day later you could read a statement from the spokesman of the Foreign Ministry that unfortunately this wasn't possible because those Rohingyas had already been "escorted" to sea. Let's hope their boat did not unfortunately get lost with them all drowned.

Thld-NEWS Jan. 17, 2009

Allegations of Human Rights Groups are overshadowing Thailand in the world news again: it is said and more or less proven by witness reports and indirect admissions of military personnel that burmese refugees who were trying to illegally enter Thailand were beaten by military personnel and then towed out to sea in a small motorless boat with little water and food and abandoned. About 300 of them died until the indian marine rescued the people remaining. The thai government wants to "look into the affair".

Thld-NEWS Jan. 1, 2009

At least 59 dead and more than 100 injured are the result of a fire in the popular Bangkok Nightclub "Santika". Many foreigners are expected to be among the victims. The reason for the fire has not been established yet. It could have been fireworks lighting in there. Let's hope it was not arson or bombs like exactly two years ago in Bangkok.

Thld-NEWS Dec. 30, 2008

The problem of the redshirts blocking parliament was solved by the PM without ordering police violence. The parliament meeting was simply moved to the complex of the foreign ministry. The demonstrators marched along but their masses couldn't move as smoothly as a few hundred MPs. So they came kind of late to the place. Anyway it was time they move on to New Year's celebrations.

Thld-NEWS Dec. 29, 2008

Following the example of the PAD the red-shirted Thaksin-Followers staged a protest in front of Parliament today to keep the new government from announcing its policy. Some MPs were afraid of entering the building. So the parliament meeting was cancelled and delayed until next year. Plan of the red-shirted DAAD is to hold a three/day/rally first, then celebrate New Year back home with their relatives and then continue their protest until the government has resigned and new elections are held.

Thld-News Dec. 17, 2008

Two days into having a new Prime Minister, Oxford-educated Abhisit Vejajiva from the Demorat Party, 44, things seem to calm down a little in Thailand, and the exchange rate from Euro to Thai Baht soars up again. Only the Thaksin followers seem less happy, calling for demonstrations, occupation of parliament and revenge on the MPs who changed sides to support the Democrat Party now.
